Two inspired (and one uninspired) mistakes that turned out to be winners.

Used a prototype laptop (iPhone 7 Plus) for the very first time in 17 years of full-time speaking. This potential (yet inspired) mistake included using a prototype slide clicker (iPhone 7).
Changed my necktie three times the first day, to coincide with three significant content topic changes. This didn’t qualify as an inspired mistake, but i did enjoy doing it for the first time ever.
Wore jeans and running shoes for the first time. Steve Jobs inspired that one.

Why were these firsts?

The iPhone’s capabilities have improved compared to when i was at Disney.

Disney has an intentional set of dress code standards and i followed the Disney standards for the first two years being out on my own.

Until this week.

Audience laughter — Provide them with laughter and allow them time to cry, if it will help.

Just one day prior to Fortune’s Most Admired list, Disney was named World’s Most Powerful Brand.

Beginner’s luck runs in my Family.

Had no idea when i was hired in 1982, that working at Disney for 30+ years would provide a special place in the professional speaker marketplace.

Most business leaders recognize the powerful, common sense approach Disney maintains and continuously improves.

You don’t do it for this, but…

visit all 50 States — A short detour on the way to Memphis airport ensured #50 was crossed off the list.

Rented a car to drive to Arkansas. Didn’t need a car, so i canceled it.

Tried to run across the bridge to Arkansas. Dead end. No luck.

Left Peabody Memphis late, but still had time for Lee to drive across the bridge to visit the 50th state.

While the final state was a big (unimportant) milestone, the standing ovation far outweighed it. To have hundreds of people feel something special (hope and enthusiasm) when you finish speaking is a blessing.

i told the generous audience, “If that was for me, too much. If it was for Walt and Lee (Cockerell), it was too little.”

Because it’s what an athlete would do in preparation for a game. Inspect the playing field.
