There was no time to be bored today

Walt Disney said, “Laughter is no enemy to learning.” i’d like to add, “It’s no enemy to anything.”

There was no time to be bored today.

Engagement, which is heavily influenced by activity and state changes, was intentionally baked into today’s 8:30am -5:00pm classroom block.

Adult learners bore easily.

It should only happen on rare exceptions, and never when you’re in charge.

.think .differently

Being organized means being intentional

Eagle Scout celebration cake
There are always many dessert choices. Plan accordingly while you’re getting your entree.

Being organized means being intentional.

Whenever you are at a buffet, make only one trip. Be intentional about your choices.

A second trip for food is not for sustanence, it’s for pleasure or to comfort pain or anxiety.

Being vibrantly organized means constantly making better choices than you used to – choices the herd no longer makes.

If Disney ran your business

Spoon doorknob on restaurant front door
A great idea for a restaurant door knob is only the beginning, not the end. Photo from two nights ago in Valparaiso, on Main Street.

Being intentional means not only paying attention to details of your business, but it also means over managing those details. Like the door knob above.

Being intentional at everything, especially things your competition under manages or ignores completely.

The reason most under manage or ignore things is because they think the customer (or employee) won’t notice. Or, if the customer (or employee) does notice, they won’t care.

Thank you Walt Disney for teaching me this

Winderemere Preparatory School
Yesterday, stormy weather in the distance.

In a brutally busy and distracting world, we either succumb to or triumph over our situation.

Disney has taught me to habitually over manage things that others either under manage or ignore.

Intentionally arriving early to pick up our son from High School affords the daily opportunity to observe and to be seen – the invisible keys to building trust.

Note: Being early means something else has to give. This is why most can’t develop the active and visible habit – they’re too busy.

Over-managing the things everyone else does

Mickey can become a little embarrassed when certain things happen.

Some of Disney Institute’s finest speakers (except 2nd from right), maybe 2012

Over-managing the same things most under-manage or ignore.

For example, certain traits that Disney is famous for.

Having Disney characters express the full range of human emotions, like Mickey Mouse above.

Having humans express the opposite of typical business emotions, like me above.

Walt taught me us that laughter is no enemy to learning.

Walt said we should take what we do very seriously, but that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously.

PS. i’m naturally drawn to over achieve. My goal was to get Mike Reardon, far right, to laugh.
