Giving back should never feel like work

Giving back should never feel like work, even though your time is precious and you don’t always have time when someone asks for it.

Yet you do your best to make it work.

Why?

Because that’s what others have done to help you get where you are today.

It’s good (midlife) karma.

Cool weather and silly rewards

High School spirit week
Freshman jump to an early lead during Spirit Week.

Cool weather and silly awards. On the short drive home from the High School safety assembly, i stopped at Publix for a few groceries.

It was a surprising wonderful few moments.

Parking in the shade, the car windows already down, there was a great song on the radio. i sat in the car until it was over, and couldn’t remember the last time i did that without feeling the stress of being late.

The Fall air was cooled even further by the breeze and walking in in just a t-shirt felt wonderful.

Without a list, i grabbed a cart and began in the produce section and casually worked my way around.

Made (unrushed) small talk with employees at two stations. And had a nice talk with the young man who pushed the groceries to the car and loaded them in.

To top it off, as i turned onto our street, the family who will soon be breaking ground next to us sat on a blanket under an Oak tree – later they shared they were having a prayer service for all the animals (including the ants) that will be displaced by their future home.

Being organized means being intentional

Eagle Scout celebration cake
There are always many dessert choices. Plan accordingly while you’re getting your entree.

Being organized means being intentional.

Whenever you are at a buffet, make only one trip. Be intentional about your choices.

A second trip for food is not for sustanence, it’s for pleasure or to comfort pain or anxiety.

Being vibrantly organized means constantly making better choices than you used to – choices the herd no longer makes.

One hundred days never felt so good

Disney's Celebration office complex
Yesterday morning at my old stomping grounds.

Disney Convention marque
DABE: Disney’s Approach to Business Excellence. Yesterday on the way home from Celebration, at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

The reward for conquering our fears and doubts is transformation.

It’s what the text books repeatedly tell us, but you know what…the past 100 days have never felt so good.

Zero emails in my inbox, sent, and trash folders at the end of each day for 100 consecutive days.

Why should anyone care?

They shouldn’t.

Unless.

Unless they are being eaten alive, one long and crazy day at a time.

There is hope.

Perhaps this post contains the push.

Oh the difference one customer driven change makes

Crazy carnival chair
Yesterday at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, waiting for a client.

Much of yesterday (Wednesday) was spent having fun, even though it was a work day. As my speaking business starts to normalize – meaning proper systems and processes are in place – i expect this to be the norm.

There was no advance preparation (prior to retiring from Disney) to structure things around Disney content because that was never the plan. So the past year has been spent “playing catch up” to meet a small change driven solely by Guest (client) demand.
