Dear Risk

Disney Flag Ceremony on September 11
Disney does this everyday. Yesterday’s September 11 anniversary was inconsequential.

Skipper Canteen
Dinner was extra-ordinary because of our server Britney (Skip).

Walt Disney World Trains
Traffic rarely gets backed up because of trains, but it does happen.

Dear Risk,

Waking up is risky.

More people die after waking up than die in their sleep.

i’ll gladly take the risk.

More people die with regret than die without.

i’ll never accept that risk.

The first Disney business book writing session. The storyboard was completed months ago.

The goal was simple, write the first sentence. Without a great first sentence, you aren’t free to begin writing.

Asked our son (16) to be creative and take a bunch of photos from different angles.

Warming up by titling the Apple Notes app page i’ll be using: “The 1st book…Leade…(notice the photo captured the “r”).

i was so focused on what i was doing, i forgot he was there.

While i had thought of the first sentence for months, i had nothing in writing because i was stuck.

We spent two hours in Magic Kingdom, but i literally had only five minutes of writing time.

We still had a 10-minute walk back to the car and a 10-minute drive home.

i looked just to see if my son was even around and mindful he had Cross Country practice in less than 10 hours.

The time pressure combined with the inspiration of the iPhone 7 and Adventureland’s Jungle Cruise Attraction, i broke through and wrote a great first sentence.

Dear Prayer,

Thank you for two knees on which to kneel, for two eyes to softly close, for two hands to gently fold.

Thank you for the presence of mind to create a daily habit of prayer first thing upon waking.

Thank you for the gift of life each day for the past 17 years in which this small, simple, daily routine has brought tremendous peace to a former life of stress and regret.

Dear running

Disney World at night
We knew last night returning to our car that this morning’s 4:30am alarm was only 8.5 hours away.

Dear running,

Thank you for revealing the secret to being organized enough to integrate a new, lifelong habit of carving out time for my daily routine to run (and go to the gym). At 17 consecutive years and counting, this habit is deeply-engrained, yet always vulnerable to insidious temptation from life’s competing and relentless temptations.

To transform me from never being a morning person to having mornings be my favorite time of the day is better than hitting the $10,000,000 lottery.

For real.

Dear Future me

iPhone 7 receipt
Purchased the new iPhone 7 and 7-Plus a few hours ago (Sept 9, 2016). The Cloud is a great place to store “stuff”.

Dear Future me,

You will eventually discover that your material possessions aren’t meant for you, they’re meant for the people who follow behind you.

Do your best to cultivate your “material story” in a way that serves as a roadmap for living a life of peace and contentment. Great roadmaps, from actual journeys (not theory nor rhetoric) are rare.

A treasure.

A gift.

Oxygen.

Dear younger me

Dear younger me,

Nothing will prepare you for the heartache you and your future wife will endure on your journey to become parents. Unfortunately, you will both learn that parenting isn’t an entitlement.

This too shall pass and you will see your Son’s 16th birthday – the story will continue to unfold but i can’t reveal the rest of it right now.

PS. Writing that book to him was a gamble. How that one ends is for the road up ahead.
