Worn out cliches

Negotiating 101? Take it or leave it! There’s a number i won’t go below. By a magnitude, it’s the biggest contract ever.

Worn out cliches fall on deaf ears because the repetition and simplicity delude us into devaluing brilliant wisdom.

Being willing to walk away from a remarkable deal that gets watered down through negotiation is the ultimate risk.

Never get bored with the basics.

Seek win-win or no deal.

If you feel you are taking a loss, walk away.

The only explanation is it must be love

sensationalized tabloid headline
Sensational headlines are great. i don’t have the desire to sensationalize blog headlines.

Some people start playing music because they love playing music – how it makes them feel when they do it.

And sometimes that love is traded in for something more.

Love is traded in for financial sustenance.

Making music for money.

Then things change.

You can no longer play what you love, you must play what the audience loves.

In the luckiest of cases, these match.

Usually they don’t.

Before i wrote this post, i was reflecting on how challenging it would be for anyone to read five daily, differently-themed posts, every single day for a decade.

And then i thought how challenging it must be to write five daily, differently-themed posts, every single day, for a decade.

The only explanation is it must be love.

Note: i love to write. Period.

Who is this crazy, determined person?

Who is this crazy, determined person?

Oh, that would be an entrepreneur.

A person who takes on greater than normal risk.

Understatement of the year, right?

He’s never seen a checking account like this

Wells Fargo deposit slip
Deposited cash to cover a $130 check. This was yesterday, Dec 5.

Our son has never seen us with $43 in our checking account.

But he’s seen our balance when there’s a steady income.

He likes steady better.

The life of an entrepreneur is risky.

Risk and reward fundamentally mirror each other.

The greater the risk, the greater the reward.

Burning the ships isn’t easy.

Living off of your last contract eventually reaches the point where the money runs out.

Paradoxically, as i write this, two contracts are waiting to be signed that will more than take care of a whole year.

An entrepreneur’s journey is difficult and lonely (and joyous)

An entrepreneur’s journey is difficult and lonely (and joyous).

The joy is high at the journey’s beginning because it’s an adventure.

Once the honeymoon-effect fades, it gets so difficult, somewhere north of 90% drop out.

This is where difficult and lonely become your traveling companions.

Travel with them long enough and and eventually you’ll see a horizon you had begun to doubt you’d ever.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.
