Yesterday’s (Day 41) Disney Leadership book writing took place at Disney’s SunTrust Building.

Only a few feet away, i walked through The Hilton at Walt Disney World’s convention center. Boxes of the book, Nice Bike, were being stacked for convention attendees.

It made me ponder the difference between the C25K running initiative to get folks off the couch to run their first 5k, and the contrast against the personal habits modification necessary to make running (or some aerobic activity) last a lifetime.

This led quickly to the business analogy:

Inspirational speaker creating a ripple effect lasting from days to weeks, and in rare occasions, months. A good shot in the arm, but it wears off. Eventually, it’s like nothing ever happened.

Catalytic speaker sharing cultural architecture to address – and solve for -root causes. One year, maybe two or three years later, the culture has made a dramatic leap, actually becoming the DNA of the company’s brand reputation.

All Disney books to be written with these three impossible goals:

  1. All written on an iPhone
  2. All written at Walt Disney World
  3. All told, seven books total (in one year)

Imagine the pushback Walt Disney used to get from some of his crazy ideas.

John Wiley and Sons was founded in 1807.

 

One week ago the email from Wiley inquired if i would be interested in talking about publishing with them.

Wiley?

Me?

Yes.

But i immediately tempered the opportunity, rather than getting excited.

Why?

In reality, it’s likely just an Editor fishing for opportunities. Similar to America’s Got Talent auditioning tons of hopefuls. Wiley, like any other business, relies on sales, and sales rely on products (and/or services). Books are their product.

Makes sense when you think about it. They have to hustle for business the same as everyone else.

The only difference here is that they came to me first. 😀

We had a productive and fun chat.

In yesterday’s call, i introduced Jeanenne to my goal of having my clients say, “I wish every author was like Jeff.”

Every* year at Disney the annual Leadership Excellence survey results had me go straight to the answer for the most important question…

“I trust my leader.”

On a five point scale of:

  1. Always
  2. Most of the time
  3. Sometimes yes, sometimes no
  4. Not very often
  5. Never

This is the question i hoped to score highest on.

* There were only a few exceptions where we skipped a year due to extenuating economic circumstances, such as the Gulf War and the year following 9/11.

Book writing begins today.

It’s not supposed to start until April Fools Day (a week from today) 2016.

i love the idea of starting before you say you’re going to start.

It’s kinda like being a kid on Christmas eve, trying to be patient for Christmas morning.

By the way, Christmas morning quickly becomes obsolete without what happens tomorrow. It took decades before this thought crossed my mind.
