You don’t do it for this, but…

visit all 50 States
A short detour on the way to Memphis airport ensured #50 was crossed off the list.

Rented a car to drive to Arkansas. Didn’t need a car, so i canceled it.

Tried to run across the bridge to Arkansas. Dead end. No luck.

Left Peabody Memphis late, but still had time for Lee to drive across the bridge to visit the 50th state.

While the final state was a big (unimportant) milestone, the standing ovation far outweighed it. To have hundreds of people feel something special (hope and enthusiasm) when you finish speaking is a blessing.

i told the generous audience, “If that was for me, too much. If it was for Walt and Lee (Cockerell), it was too little.”

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Being organized sometimes means we have to confront things

Disney Business Best Practices
Excellent customer service could be pervasive but t’s not. Photo: LinkedIn screen shot.

Being organized sometimes means we have to confront things.

Our house painters either were not excellent the past few days or our standards are too high.

State Farm told me:

  • “Unfortunately, you’re going to have to drive a two-tone car.”
  • “Our managers don’t talk to customers.”

And these are me paraphrasing:

  • “We are ok with the fact you’ll have to drive a two-tone car.”
  • “We are ok with you spending more than the vehicle is worth to get it looking like a car that wasn’t in an accident.”

Meeting with State Farm Agency owner in a few hours to see if face-to-face the story is the same as it is in the comfort of a call center.

A note about professional speakers

Disney Keynote Speakers
Took this with my iPhone during Disney’s 2103 annual Service Awards banquet.

A note about professional speakers.

There are a ton of them.

Whom should you hire?

There are all trying to get picked, and they make their skills, experience, and abilities sound ah-mazing.

i on the other hand, dislike (understatement of 2015) hype. So i wrote this thought the other day:

My recipes aren’t complicated. Anyone can tell you what the recipes are (even by copying mine). But no one can explain them in depth and breadth, with personal Disney example after personal Disney example.

Photo above: In 2013 my wife and i were celebrating our 30th Disney anniversary at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with hundreds of others celebrating 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 year Walt Disney World years-of-service milestones.

How much is enough, and how far is too far?

Winter Garden Theater inside
Got a quick look last night. Will be teaching here in a month. Yesterday’s (and today’s) class was above this theater.

How much is enough, and how far is too far?

Yesterday’s speech was envisioned and practiced down to the smallest detail.

There is always the chance that what we offer can be overwhelming to the recipient.

And so it goes…

There is always the chance that what we offer isn’t nearly enough.

Each speech i do is different from any other speech i’ve delivered. And each speech is used as another step up the confidence ladder. However, with the Montreal speech, i took a giant two-step step.

Note: The business man sitting across the exit row aisle seat from me was from France. We chatted before taking off in New York, and for a little while longer as we climbed to cruising altitude. He was heading to Gaylord Palms (near Disney) for a Dentist convention. He’s a Dentist in France. He checked his messages as soon as we landed, and he was the first to share the horrific Paris attacks last night. He lives in eastern France, but has a nephew in Paris. He immediately called his nephew (who was alright) and his nephew told him, “Stay in America.”
