We were genuinely concerned about the fire reaching Apgar

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
The right glow is closer than i remember it last night. Look carefully in the upper middle left and you may notice two light spots – fire on Mt Brown.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
In a perfect world, we’ll get 5.5 hours sleep. It wasn’t a perfect world last night.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
The fire on Mt Brown (left side of photo) is raging 11 miles away. The right glow started mildly concerning us.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
We became mesmerized at the fire trying to breach the ridge (a couple miles away. With high winds coming at us, we agreed to be ready at any time to jump in the car.

Lake McDonald Fire 2017
Foreground: the two balcony chairs outside our window.

As we retired to our room from a wonderfully relaxing day, and crawled into bed, we watched the fire grow in intensity and wondered if the Canadian cold front winds could push the fire to our hotel before dawn.

We watched the “show” for three hours until 11PM.

At 10PM, we stepped outside to try “one more time” to get a photo that did justice to what we saw with the naked eye.

Panic.

Our door shut and neither one of us had a key.

Lake McDonald’s waves now had white caps crashing the shore and i wore nothing but running shorts.

Unless another Guest invited Howard and i to sleep in their room, i pictured hypothermia.

i also knew we’d miss our 3:45AM drive to the airport.

i witnessed my third “save” in less than a week.

Enjoy and amplify the present moment

The significance to me of the first three photos cannot be overstated.

Lake McDonald Private Cabins
The Last Lecture is one of two books i read in 2008 that convinced me to retire from Disney and start my own business.

Lake McDonald Private Cabins
i purchased this same two-dimensional map last Summer for the very fact that it isn’t one-dimensional. It exemplifies Glacier’s big picture, grandeur, and context as the Crown of The Continent.

Lake McDonald Private Cabins
Daisies are our (me and Cheryl) favorite flower.

Lake McDonald Private Cabins
Photo/painting on the wall is from the St. Mary Chalets from the 1930’s. They are long gone and few know they ever existed. But i know. Photo: Upstairs bedroom.

Lake McDonald Private Cabins
This may be the last time we see Lake McDonald Lodge and adjacent private cabins. The severely close fire and wind have no mercy and no emotional attachment. Photo from upstairs bedroom.

It’s not the Magic that makes it work…

It’s the work that makes it Magic.

i’m always working, even when it appears otherwise.

Most of it is “Backstage”, a term we use at Disney to describe everything the Guests can’t see.

The icebergs were small, but they were still icebergs. In a lake no less, not an ocean. Over a mile above sea level.

The couple that almost walked into the Grizzly sat next to us on the boat shuttle back to the hotel.

They were so shaken, they turned around and canceled their hike.
