Organized for travel

Apple Store Lehigh Valley Mall
He beat me at chess yesterday…on a Mac, at the Apple Store.

Does courage and personal organization go hand in hand?

We probably don’t think about the correlation.

But there’s power in doing it.

For only the second time since owning a laptop (2008), i’m traveling without it.

In it’s place, an iPhone 6. Blogging on a mobile device has finally reached hassle-free status.

The biggest hassle had been inserting photos into a post.

Traveling light is a metaphor and a reality.

Staying organized is a moving target

Apple Watch shopping
Cheryl got to try on some Watches.

At the Apple Store “open training” session yesterday, i discovered something i didn’t understand. You cannot store things in iCloud storage that aren’t on your Mac. If you delete it off your Mac, it automatically deletes off of iCloud.

iCloud is not a virtual external hard drive for everything. It only backs up what you physically have on your computer.

Lesson learned. Grateful for the clarification, even though it defeats my hopes.

Dropbox is the likely solution.

Staying organized is a moving target.

Editor’s note (100 days later, today Nov. 19): i am not using Drop Box, nor any other storage platform.

New to do list item is to do less

Bricks
This accidental photo yesterday is perfect for today’s post about a strong, lean foundation.

A new item has populated my to do list. It’s to do less. And do those (less) things differently. My one-word mantra for 2015 is ‘lean’. Here are some recent examples of trimming the overwhelm out of my life:

  • Trimmed 10k+ Twitter followers to seven. Easy to stay current.
  • Trimmed 1k Facebook Page ‘Likes’ to 200. Easier to stay current.
  • Recycling cables, cords, and devices that are no longer digitally relevant.
  • Stopped drinking coffee and diet coke. No longer feel compelled to have these.
  • Thinning clothes that i’ll never wear, even though they look ‘nice’.
  • Trimmed the snack food snacking. More trips to grocery store to keep fresh fruit handy.
  • Turned off Facebook and LinkedIn notifications on iPhone. Less distracting.
  • i end each day with zero emails in my inbox, sent folder, and trash folder.

Slow and steady wins the race, but only with focus and discipline. And commitment.

You’re in charge of all these things and more.

Being organized has many contexts

Map My Run stats
Technology, just yesterday, tracked & organized, then gave my total steps since retirement.

Being organized has many contexts.

Today’s revolves around the notion of being organized to perfection in our work.

My one job tomorrow from 9-10am is to inspire 300 business professionals to do two simple things:

  1. .lead .differently
  2. .behave .differently

And to do it in such an organized fashion that it will be the best leadership keynote they will ever experience.

Ever.

Period.

Organized to travel lean

Delta digital boarding pass
Today.

Delta misses us sometimes. And maybe they think we’re cheating on them by regularly flying another airline.

How can we tell?

They confirmed the first class upgrade a few days ago. And last night, confirmed the final flight home is also a confirmed first class upgrade.

Only carrying a small backpack and an even smaller shoulder bag.
