Swiftcurrent Valley, day 4, home

This valley was carved by glaciers.

This general, easy public access has only happened since 1910.

Before that, think “ jurassic park”.

Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old.

We only gained public access to this space a century ago.

Try to wrap your head around that.

Ps. It’s impossible.

base ball cap labeled Babb (Montana) — You have to drive through Babb, Montana (takes three seconds) to get to Swiftcurrent Valley.

My first visit to Glacier was Summer 1973.

i was an impressionable young teenager.

Our chartered cross-country bus carrying 40 Boy Scouts plus chaperones drove through Babb at dusk.

The only way to drive to Swiftcurrent Valley is through Babb.

Once you finish the 3-second drive through Babb, it’s another 13 miles until the road ends at Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

Traveling without a laptop in 2025-26 is a new found freedom.

One that’s easy to imagine but challenging to live with.

Not only living with it, embracing it.

July 23 and 24, reverse wildcard, home

Glacier National Park (GNP). Lake McDonald Lodge. We will miss staying here this year. It’s on GNP’s West side. We are spending all of 2026 on the East side.

Calling tomorrow’s departure ‘the start of our Glacier 2026 Farewell Tour.’

Only 31 days this year.

We’ll hit four great regions:

Swiftcurrent and Many Glacier Valleys
St Mary
East Glacier
Rising Sun and Logan Pass

This is the first Summer since 2017 we haven’t had a Sperry Chalet or Granite Park Chalet reservation.
