Looking back on the decision to retire from Disney

Disney Keynote Speaker
Every single day. My life is deeply impacted by Walt and Steve. Deeply.

Looking back on the decision to retire from Disney…

It’s a tie with joining the Disney organization January 25, 1982, as the best career move i ever made.

Trust your home gut

Last night at Swiftcurrent Pass, on our way to record two podcast episodes.
  • Never hike alone.
  • Always carry bear spray.
  • Always make noise on the trail.

Two out of three ain’t bad.

After filling the camelback with water, i started the 400 meter return walk to the Granite Park Chalet.

A few steps into the walk and i was suddenly 12 feet away from a Grizzly Bear.

Had i not spoken to Dan 75 minutes earlier, i would have froze, drawn the bear spray, released the safety lock, and waited for whatever happened next. This was insanely and dangerously close. i can not imagine a good outcome. At all.

Instead, i trusted my gut.

In a nano-second i decided to turn my back on the Grizzly and keep walking.

It all happened so fast i did not have time to draw the bear spray. Didn’t even stop walking. The decision to keep walking happened from the time i lifted the right foot to take a step and before that right foot landed to complete that step.

Nothing i have read or studied in 46 years of Glacier National Park visits recommends what i did. In fact, it is highly discouraged – “sure, just turn your back and walk away” said no one ever.

Take only photographs, leave only footprints

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

You live differently when you live without electricity, running water and flushing toilets.

You live differently when everything you carry in you also carry out.

Until you’ve done it, it is challenging to comprehend the habit changes and mindset changes you absolutely need to make in order to thrive without foundational civilized living basics.

Note: While we have a room and a metal bed and mattress, there is no heat, no electricity, no lighting, and no creature comforts. It awakens an awareness that may never come otherwise.

If podcasts could talk

Mt. Gould upper left. Reynolds, Oberlin and Clements upper right edge.
An “i was there” shot.
Another “i was there” shot.
Taken from 8,200’ looking North. This is our hiking vicinity today, August 28.
Zooming in.
More zooming. Mt Cleveland dominates the entire upper horizon – from left to right is one mountain. Cleveland is Glacier’s tallest peak at 10,600′.
Jody taking a couple’s (Aurora and Matthew) photo.
Might be the only photo of Jody and me at Swiftcurrent fire tower. All four of us shivered so badly we were forced to leave.

The recording quantity i envisioned is less than we’ve produced so far.

In this disparity lies an insight: Make plans, stay creative, and be flexible.

Profoundly simple and simply profound.

Additionally, i have a Swiftcurrent Motor Inn reservation for today but am forfeiting it due to a better opportunity (today).

Hiking Ahern Pass and staying put at Granite Park Chalet.

Is it wasteful to lose one-night’s deposit at Swiftcurrent?

No.

Why?

Booking a non-refundable hotel reservation gave us options as i planned in advance from Orlando.

Options that could never be created had i arrived here unprepared.

Ahern Pass is a better, and more rare, hiking option today.

As a bonus, tomorrow becomes a “free day” for hiking. Meaning we can decide today, tonight, or even tomorrow where we want to hike. Our options are incredible.

Over-focusing allows incredible options to flourish.

Organized for beauty

At sunset last night, by the Chalet’s front door.

You have to see it, feel it, experience it, touch it, taste it.

Then you will understand why i have organized the Summer of 2019 as my office of choice over any other place on the planet.

The beauty of my ideas from this Summer has paid for itself.

And i’m only one-half way through the Glacier National Park work session.
